Ngoma District has got a big investment potential in the Ceramics Industry which encompass such a vast array of materials that a concise definition is almost impossible. However, one workable definition of ceramics is a refractory, inorganic and non-metallic material. It can be divided into two classes: traditional and advanced. Traditional ceramics include clay products, silicate glass and cement while advanced ceramics consist of carbides (SiC), pure oxides (Al203), nitrides (Si3N4), non-silicate glasses and many others. Ceramics offer many advantages compared to other materials. They are harder and stiffer than steel; more heat and corrosion resistant than materials or polymers; less dense than most metals and their alloys; and their raw materials are both plentiful and inexpensive. Ceramic materials display a wide range of properties which facilitate their use in many different product areas.
The district has abundant deposits that are sufficient for the establishment of a viable ceramics industry especially Rurenge Sector at Kanyirangoli and at Mbuye. The current emphasis is based on traditional ceramics, especially based on clay as the chief raw material. For the purpose of value addition and therefore substitute for some imports, this project aims at creation of ceramic production units. At this point it is important to give some information on the known deposits of key raw materials for the ceramics industry. These include certain clays, feldspar and kaolin deposits.
The main uses of clay are listed below
- For full bricks and non full bricks making
- For floors and ceilings making
- For making facing materials: rounded or flat tiles
- Varied elements: tiled floor, decoration elements, potteries, drainage pipes
